The next generation of high-performance electric propulsion is entering the marine sector as EPTechnologies and RIB Unlimited reveal the RIB Unlimited 8H, a fully electric rigid inflatable boat powered by the Falcon 130 kW outboard and a 90 kWh battery system. Developed as a joint project between the two Scandinavian companies, the vessel represents a significant step forward in electric high‑speed monohull design through a combination of lightweight engineering, advanced hydrodynamics and purpose-built propulsion.

At the centre of the system is EPTechnologies’ Falcon outboard, designed specifically for electric drive. The unit integrates a compact motor and a 360‑degree rotating lower section that enables precise maneuverability and minimises drag in operation. The compact layout also supports better weight distribution and maximises usable onboard space, which are critical for performance-focused vessels.

RIB Unlimited contributed its experience in racing hulls and composite manufacturing to reduce weight at every stage. The hull has been vacuum‑infused using advanced lamination processes and lightweight reinforcements, delivering both rigidity and hydrodynamic efficiency. With further reductions achieved through the selection of construction materials and the integration of recycled plastics, the design achieves sustainability alongside structural performance.

The 8H is built to cruise at around 25 knots, with a balance of speed, range and energy efficiency. The partnership between the propulsion specialist and hull manufacturer shows how electric drive systems can be engineered to deliver the agility and acceleration expected from high‑speed marine craft. According to EPTechnologies’ CEO Kasper Falkenberg, the combination of the Falcon outboard with an ultralight hull demonstrates that electric boats are capable of higher performance and greater range without compromising sustainability. RIB Unlimited’s CEO Martin Philip highlighted that combining dedicated electric propulsion development with decades of hydrodynamic optimisation has made it possible to deliver an electric RIB that balances performance, efficiency and environmental benefit.

This project illustrates how the transition to electrification in demanding marine applications is becoming feasible through integration of vehicle dynamics, hull design and propulsion engineering. By focusing on weight reduction across all systems and employing a propulsion unit built solely for electric drive, the RIB Unlimited 8H sets a precedent for future developments in sustainable performance boating.
