Heralding the era of underwater flight

Dutch developer U-Boat Worx has completed sea trials of its electric Super Sub, the fastest private submersible ever built, writes Nick Flaherty.
The three-seat design has 100 kW of horizontal thrust and a top speed of nine knots, and is capable of dynamic inclines and descents of up to 45°.
The electric sub has an operational depth of 300 m and a range of up to 10 nmi from a 62 kWh battery pack. It has four 25 kW thrusters for drive and two 6 kW thrusters for fine positioning.
Testing in Curaçao focused on performance validation and fine-tuning the safety architecture that underpins the vessel. A sonar system continuously scans the seabed, autonomously adjusting trajectory and easing the craft into a parabolic path as it approaches its depth envelope.
