From the different chemical additives in the battery cells to boost the performance of the electrolytes to the flame- retardant coatings of battery packs, the choice of materials can make a dramatic difference to the design of a platform. This can range from the different materials in a modular battery pack, as we explore on page 58, to the leading-edge design of the WAE EVR skateboard for supercars on page 20. The need for a detailed understanding of the different materials in a platform is often overlooked, but this understanding can provide the optimisation required to push a design to the next level. The issues resulting from the choice of materials are often highlighted by the test systems, and we look at the latest developments in powertrain testing on page 64, while the wider design trade- offs for e-mobility platforms are detailed in our conversation with Stephen Lambert, head of electrification at McLaren Applied, on page 16, for those next-level designs.
