Advocates of the technology would say it never went away, and that developments have continued to progress. In one move, BMW is fitting a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain into an existing platform, and using existing components such as pumps (see The Grid, page 6). Sodium batteries (see Insight, page 56) are also being proposed, to sit alongside the fuel cell to capture energy from regenerative braking. Distribution of hydrogen has always been an issue though. That has led to the use of ammonia as a fuel for tractors and ships (see The Grid, page 6), to generate hydrogen for fuel cells. However, the distribution issue is changing fast. The global energy crisis is driving a move away from natural gas, and hydrogen has long been proposed as a replacement. It could even be supplied from filling stations as sales of vehicles with IC engines finish in the West from 2030. While that is driving the move to a growing range of battery technologies (see Battery Show report, page 48), it could well be that hydrogen’s time has also come.
