T he news in our Grid section (page 6) that Wright Electric has developed a 2 MW motor suitable for electric aircraft is a welcome advance to address these challenges. Coupled with aluminium-air batteries or a hydrogen fuel cell to provide power, the motor and inverter will be retrofitted into a 100-seater aircraft to demonstrate its use for large passenger aircraft. The laminations in the motor are a key element in achieving its performance, and we report on the technology of laminations in our focus on page 64, while the advances in switching topologies with wide-bandgap transistors to provide higher performance in the inverter are examined on page 56. The move to EVs is already well underway, and was clearly demonstrated at this year’s Cenex-LCV exhibition, as our coverage starting on page 46 shows. Part of that move has been to hybridise existing IC engine designs with 48 V technology, increasingly for heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment, as we show on page 32. The decisions at COP26 will see hybrids being gradually phased out and replaced by full battery EVs. But the legacy will be the move to 48 V power distribution networks that will help to improve the overall efficiency and reduce the weight of the vehicles. Nick Flaherty l Technology Editor The covers of this magazine have had a Cellomed antimicrobial coating applied. This coating is speci ically designed to stop the spread of bacteria on printed matter. It employs a silver-based formulation to protect against the survival of microorganisms on the print surface. Its anti- bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties will not diminish throughout the life of the magazine. 4 Winter 2021 | E-Mobility Engineering Intro | Winter 2021 Read a ll back issues online www.ust-media.com UST 40 :OCT/NOV 2021 UK £15,USA$30,EUROPE e 22 Self-control Focus on AI and machine learning Form and function Build tips for ground control stations Walking the walk Why the ANYbotics ANYmal D UGV has the legs for industrial inspections THE COMMUNICATIONS HUB OF THE RACING POWERTRAIN WORLD VALERIALORETI: ReimaginingFormulaOne fuel www.highpowermedia.com NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2021 UK £15,US/CN$25,EUROPE e 22 PRO MOD PROGRESS Mike Moran redefines the drag racing pushrod V8 MONTE CARLO OR BUST What is the scope for all-electric rallying?
