For example, on page 50 we detail the technology behind the ZeroAvia fuel cell electric aircraft. Meanwhile, Joby Aerospace’s five-seater VTOL aircraft has made its maiden flight, flying for more than 150 miles and 77 minutes on a single charge, highlighting the increasing capability of NMC-graphite battery technology for short flights that had been seen as a technical challenge for this type of aircraft. Elsewhere, Volocopter and Opener have demonstrated passenger-carrying production aircraft, albeit for distances of only a few miles, although Opener’s single-seater Blackfly does not require a pilot’s licence. The Volocopter 2X two-seater has flown with a crew, and the company is preparing for series production after the acquisition of its composites supplier DG Flugzeugbau. All three eVTOL platforms are the result of more than 10 years of development, with much of the design and production of the key motor, battery technology and composites now being carried out in-house. In the light of that, on page 56 we look at the challenges surrounding the materials choices for electric aircraft motors. Thanks to this in-house production, all three companies are looking at qualification in 2022 for full commercial services by 2024. Other developers, such as Lilium and Astro Aerospace, are not far behind with production plans for longer range aircraft in a similar timeframe. These developments show that viable electric aircraft journeys will become a reality before long. Nick Flaherty l Technology Editor The covers of this magazine have had a Cellomed antimicrobial coating applied. This coating is speci ically designed to stop the spread of bacteria on printed matter. It employs a silver-based formulation to protect against the survival of microorganisms on the print surface. Its anti- bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties will not diminish throughout the life of the magazine. 4 Autumn 2021 | E-Mobility Engineering Intro | Autumn 2021 THE COMMUNICATIONS HUB OF THE RACING POWERTRAIN WORLD DAVIDSALTERS: FromFormulaOne toHPD www.highpowermedia. com AUGUST 2021 UK £15,USA$25,EUROPE e 22 SPRING/SUMMER 2020 UK £15,USA$25,EUROPE e 22 www.highpowermedia.com PORSCHE’S ELECTROMAGNETISM Inside a dominant 24-hour e-Drive THE ULTIMATE CONFIGURATION Developing a new-generation V16 EXTREME PROGRESSION Tractor Pulling’s strength showdown FUTURE RACE ENGINE FUELS Alternatives to allow the IC engine to survive Read all back issues online www.ust-media.com UST 39 :AUG/SEPT 2021 UK £15,USA$30,EUROPE e 22 Exact replicas The latest in simulation tools New headings Autopilots advance tomeet the needs ofmodernUAV designs Sea breeze Ease of customisation marks out the Maritime Robotics Mariner survey ASV
